Please read the following information before attempting to use MacVoice 1.0
Demo. This version adds support for 6.1 ROMS. It also fixes a small bug that you will encounter if the caller presses an invalid input key while in Answer & Prompt mode.
You need:
A 68020 or better
A ZyXEL 1496 Series Modem
ZyXEL ROM Version 5.05 Or Later (6.10 Not Recommended**)
System 7
** If you have problems with garbage messages, follow the troubleshooting suggestions below. If your problem still is not fixed, and you have 6.10 ROMs, replace them with 6.00 or 6.01 ROMs. If you then experience no problems, please let us know.
You should (for slower Macs, such as IIcx's, II's, LCII, etc):
Turn OFF virtual memory.
Additionally, if you have performance problems, such as static when recording
messages, you should:
Turn OFF File Sharing
Reduce backgrounding tasks that take away processor time.
If MacVoice 1.0 crashes on your machine, try turning off 32 bit addressing. If the problem is then resolved, please give us a call to report your specific machine configuration.
IF, WHILE RECORDING MESSAGES, YOUR DTR LIGHT DROPS, THEN YOUR MACINTOSH IS UNABLE TO HANDLE THE SERIAL DATA RATE. Drop to a slower rate. ANOTHER SYMPTOM OF YOUR MACINTOSH BEING UNABLE TO KEEP UP WITH DATA RATE IS A LOUD UNPLEASANT STATIC SOUND IN YOUR MESSAGES. Good uses ADPCM2, Better uses ADPCM3, and BEST uses CELP.
68000 based Macintoshes can only use MacVoice 1.0 with a Plus series modem,
and only use CELP compression, i.e. BEST voice quality. Do not attempt to use
GOOD or BETTER quality compressions with a 68000 Macintosh. The processor cannot process the serial data fast enough.
BETTER quality mode uses ADPCM3, which requires a serial thru-put of 28.8Kbps.
If you have a 16Mhz 68030 or slower (such as IIcx, SE/30, Classic II, II, LC,
LCII, and IIx), you may experience trouble recording messages in BETTER
quality mode. If the DTR light on your modem drops while recording a message,
then your Macintosh is unable to keep up with the high serial data rate. Drop
down to GOOD quality mode that requires only a 19.2Kbps serial rate.

Using MacVoice:
This demo version limits that maximum incoming message length to 5 seconds.
Everything else is fully functional. Due to space considerations, the voice
time stamp messages are not included in this demo distribution. Therefore,
when you call in to check your messages, your messages will NOT be time
stamped.
Make sure Distinctive Rings is not checked. You should first set all your
answering settings, from the answering settings dialog under the Answering
Menu. Select the Answer & Record mode.
You should next record your initial outgoing messages. You will need to
record the following messages:
answer&RecordMessage: your initial greeting to the caller. Make it long
enough so that you have time to enter your password when you call in remotely
goodByeMessage: what you want MacVoice to say when terminating a call.
You may wish to Blank this message.
remoteAccessMessage: directs you on what your options are after you have
entered a correct password. Should say: Press 3 to check Common Box messages,
Press 1 to check Box One Messages, Press 2 to check Box Two Messages". Note
that in the Answer And Record Mode, call messages are stored in the Common
Box.
All other required messages may be blanked. We have tried to name them
intiutively.
Initiating Answering.
Go to the main dialog. Click on Begin Answering. Call in from a remote
phone, and MacVoice 1.0 answer calls.
Entering your password:
Be sure to use a good quality corded phone. ZyXEL recommends that cordless
phones not be used when entered DTMF tones.
When MacVoice answers your call and starts playing your outgoing message, wait
approximately 1 second, and press the '#' key. MacVoice will stop playing the
outgoing message. Then within 10 seconds enter your three digit password. If
you entered it correctly, MacVoice 1.0 will play back your
remoteAccessMessage. Press 3 to review Common Box messages.
Other Notes:
Answer Only mode does not let callers record messages.
Answer & Prompt mode uses a recurring menuing system as follows:
Call answered with answer&Prompt mode play the answer&PromptMessage. Then MacVoice 1.0 waits for an input of either 1, 2 or 3. If no input received, MacVoice 1.0 assumes caller is unable to make a selection and automatically records in Common Box. If input is entered, the box message for selected box is played, and a message is recorded. Caller enters any key to terminate message (or remains silent). mainMenuMessage is played for recurring menuing. MacVoice 1.0 terminates call if no input is entered at any time.
What you should record for each message:
In order to provide you with a high level of customization over your voice mail needs, MacVoice requires you to record several outgoing messages. Even though an initial effort is required to record these messages, you will find that most outgoing messages do not have to be changed after their intial recording. We hope the following examples help you record meaningful messages.
answerOnlyMessage: "Thank you for calling Acme Publishing. We are closed now. Please call back during normal business hours."
answer&RecordMessage: "I am unable to answer your call at this time. At the beep please leave a message"
answer&PromptMessage: "Thank you for calling Acme Publishing. We are unable to answer calls at this time. Press 1 to leave a message for John, press 2 to leave a message for Dick, or please hold on to leave a message for customer service."
boxOneMessage, boxTwoMessage, commonBoxMessage: "You have reached the voice mail box for Tom. Please leave a message at the beep. Press 0 to end your message, or simply hang up".
mainMenuMessage: "To leave another message, press the box number desired OR press 0 to end this call."
goodByeMessage: "Thank you for calling Acme Publishing. Have a good day"
remoteAccessMenuMessage: "Press 1,2 or 3 to review messages in those boxes"
noMessagesWaitingMessage: "Sorry, no messages in that box"
invalidInputMessage: "That was an invalid response."
incorrectPasswordMessage: "Incorrect password. Please hang up and try again"
